CHARACTERS
-The female cones of gymnosperms are called as megastrobili.
- They contain many scales called as megasporophylls.
-The female cones of gymnosperms contain two ovules per scale. Only one megaspore mother cell undergoes meiosis in each ovule and three
of the four breaks down, and only a single surviving cell develops into female
multicellular gametophyte.
- For pollination to take place, a sticky pollination droplet oozes out from a tiny
hole in the female cone to catch the pollen grains.
