Brown rust of rice

Brown rust of rice also called as brown spot or sesame leaf spot commonly seen is
rice(Oryzae sativa) caused by the fungus Cochliobolus miyabeanus (originally
Helminthosporium oryzae). .The fungus attacks the crop from seedling stage in nursery to
milk stage in main field.

Characteristic Symptoms:
-The disease appears first as minute brown dots, later becoming cylindrical or oval to
circular(resemble sesame seed).
-Then several spots coalesce and the leaf dries up.
-Infection also occurs on panicle, neck with brown colour appearance even the seeds are
infected .
-The infection of the seed causes failure of seed germination, seedling mortality and reduces
the grain quality and weight and 50% yield reduction in severe cases .
