  1. 1.Lepidosteus is commonly known as garpike.
  2. 2.Body is elongated and cylindrical and divided into head, trunk and tail.
  3. 3.Scales are rhombic, thick, ganoin-coated and articulated by peg and socket joints.
  4. 4.Dorsal and anal fins are short and far behind the pelvic fins. Caudal fin is semi-heterocercal.
  5. 5.Head is produced into snout. Both the upper and lower jaws are elongated, forming a long tapering beak. Teeth are numerous, slender and of unequal size.
  6. 6.Vertebrae are opisthocoelous and are like reptiles, a unique feature. Vomer paired.
  7. 7.Pyloric caeca is branched.
  8. 8.Breeding season is in the month of May. Eggs are extremely sticky and adhere to the rocks and stones in which they are deposited.
  9. 9.Gars skin is used for the manufacture of hand bags and arts.
  10. 10.Lepidosteus inhabits the freshwaters of North America.
